Calligaris brand history

The story of Calligaris begins in the post-war years in 1923 in the Italian town of Manazano. After World War I, 70% of all industries were destroyed. People had to start building everything anew, so small artisan workshops were created. Antonio Calligaris set up one of these, making the classic Marocca chairs with a wooden frame and straw seat. From then until 1950, Calligaris produced chairs, and at that time it was mainly women who worked in the workshop, weaving the straw seats and painting the wood. In the 1950s, Calligaris also introduced the Milano chair - the first ever office chair.

After the Second World War, when people got back into business, the demand for chairs grew exponentially. The industry started to grow and Calligaris was producing chairs like clockwork. The founder's son, Romeo Calligaris, joined the design train at this time. In the 1970s, the company developed in an industrial sense. Modernisation, the arrival of a third generation in the company's management and research into new materials propelled the company a little further. By the end of the 1970s, it had its first catalogue and exported its chairs through local dealers across Italy and Europe.

In the 1990s the company exported not only throughout Europe but also to the USA and the East. A particularly big hit was the Friuli chair, which at the time covered 80% of domestic demand. Allesandro Calligari, representing the third generation of the founding family, became president of the company and led the company forward. In addition to the widely used and popular wood, Calligaris began to use a range of new materials such as glass, metal and leather. In the new millennium, Calligaris established itself internationally. After the opening of the first brick-and-mortar store in Milan, branches in London and Paris followed.
