Michiel van der Kley

Michiel van der Kley was born in 1962 in The Hague and started designing and manufacturing furniture for his own company in 1989. His designs are produced by leading furniture companies in the Netherlands and abroad. His work is inspired by nature and music, especially jazz. He believes that the shape of an object is always something whole and welcomes details as an integral part of the design, not something to just decorate with. Quality design, he believes, bears a certain resemblance to things from nature, whether it's in texture, shape or just a small detail like the transition from the leg to the fabric of the chair.

He has won many awards for his work, the most famous being the Singapore Merit Award 2006. He is currently professionally associated with Softline.
