The worldwide success of Danish design

Founded in 1979, the SOFTLINE brand originally began as K. Balling-Engelsen - manufacturer of polyurethane foam for the Norwegian furniture market. The SOFTLINE brand itself was born from the idea of using foam in a new and innovative way.

In 1980, the brand began a collaboration with designer Kurt Brandt, who soon created the PAX sofa, which immediately became a bestseller. It scored particularly well because with just a few movements it transforms into a comfortable double bed. This stunning combination of design and functionality has become the hallmark of the entire company. This creative designer was able to see the polyurethane foam material in stunning ways and exploit its full potential. In the 1980s and 1990s he created a number of collections of trendy furniture. Attractive and timeless designs launched the star career of the entire brand. After such great success in its home country of Denmark, the SOFTLINE brand naturally gravitated towards exports. Starting in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and the Benelux countries, the brand soon found a place throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia and today imports to 61 countries worldwide.

After the death of Kurt Brandt in 1997, SOFTLINE began to collaborate with several new designers. One of them was the young talent Flemming Busk, who later became famous in the duo busk+hertzog. This duo later created many of SOFTLINE's design products and pushed the company in a certain direction. We should not forget to mention other important faces of the brand in this era: Karim Rashid, Hiromichi Konno, Thomas Müller, Nanna Ditzel and Stine Engelbrechtsen. The latest designs are presented every year at the leading international furniture fairs in Milan, Paris and Cologne. In 1981, K. Balling-Engelsen was eventually taken over by the oil company Shell, which sold it to a Finnish investment company in 2000. In August 2003, the SOFTLINE brand was successfully divested to brand management and began operating as an independent private company under the leadership of Finn H. Sørensen.

SOFTLINE as an icon

In addition to furnishing thousands of homes and public spaces around the world, the SOFTLINE brand has been involved in many entertaining and high-profile projects. Busk + hertzog designed the HELLO chair for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation as a gift for Kylie Minogue. Today you can see the HELLO chair in the Danish Museum of Art and Design in Copenhagen and the National Gallery in Oslo. The sofa LOTUS starred in the fashionable interior of the popular film "Sex and the City". GRAND PRIX and DONUT were presented as a gift to the Danish Crown Prince and Princess.

Today, SOFTLINE has about 70 employees, works with more than 15 top designers and employs more than 100 people working for the main suppliers producing components for SOFTLINE furniture. The strong concept of unique, modern and functional designer furniture is evolving every day. SOFTLINE is constantly launching new creative design products and the desire for innovation, which was the starting point when the brand was founded in 1979, is still the driving force behind the brand.
