Hermes/Jessen

Philipp Hermes and Dustin Jessen began their collaboration during their student years - as students at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany. One of their first successes was winning the Newcomer Award from the German Association of Industrial Designers (VDID) at interzum in 2011. After a break in which they both pursued their postgraduate work, they founded their own studio Hermes/Jessen Industrial Design (HJID) in Cologne.

As designers, they believe in the power of parameters - a product should evolve naturally from the nature of the materials, the manufacturing requirements and, above all, the needs of the users. In their designs, they very often experiment with the use of different, often disparate materials and construction details along with unusual manufacturing techniques. Their aim in design is to achieve the best possible results that are user-oriented - whether in terms of practicality or comfort and sophistication.
